Machine Raw Edge Applique Beginners Class
Colourwerx has created the Mod Squad Applique quilt pattern which is perfect for teaching an introductory machine applique class. We will be learning the blanket stitch and triple straight stitch applique in this beginner class. We will be making one block from the pattern in the class perfect for making a pillow if you like. 1 Fat Quarter for background
8"x18" scrap to stabilize and to practice your applique
1 Fat Quarter for hair
1 - 10" scrap for glasses and practice pieces
1 - 10" scrap for inner part of glasses and practice pieces
3/4 yd Shape flex
1 yd soft fuse
90/14 embroidery needle
80 wt Decobob or bobbin weight thread
Decorative threads of choice - If you only have a single blanket stitch you can go as high as a 12 wt thread. Poly embroidery threads, variegated quilting threads, something to match hair and glasses color, bring a selection.

In choosing the block you will make in class – See Sample -
· make sure you can get it cut out and stitched in the allotted time
· make sure it has a number of curves and points, but not too many (or you won’t finish).
Have a 8” x 18” scrap stabilized background piece ready to put some practice applique pieces on.
Machine requirements – in class we will only be covering triple straight stitch 3.0SL and blanket stitch(button stitch) applique. If you have a single or triple blanket stitch that can be adjusted either of those will meet class requirements. We will be adjusting on one application 2.5 SW/ 2.5 SL, on a second application 3.0SW/3.0SL.

| Instructor Bio: | Denise Reuter has lived in Madison County for 39 years with a couple of short excursions to the DC area for her husband's job. She has been teaching here and in the DC area since 2003. She began sewing as a child on her grandmother's 1935 Singer treadle sewing machine, working her way up to her mom's Kenmore, and on to her own hot pink White brand machine. She has created everything from quilts to ski jackets, wrap around skirts to prom dresses, draperies and upholstery, machine applique and computerized machine embroidery. She began teaching entry level sewing classes for Hancock Fabrics in 2003. In 2007, she took a position at BERNINA Sewing Machine USA for 2 years as a manager and educator. In late 2010 she returned full time to her passion, teaching, for the three North Alabama Hancock Fabrics stores where she expanded her course selections to intermediate classes, serger classes, quilting classes, machine applique and machine embroidery classes. Again in 2015 through 2018 she received extensive training and taught for a BERNINA Dealer while in the DC area. She has become experienced with every brand of sewing machine and serger, receiving extensive training from Janome and Bernina sewing machine companies. |
