Hand Embroidery 101 with Judy Ballance

Have you ever wanted to learn the basics of hand embroidery? If so this class is for you. You will learn how to hand embroidery on a cute laser cut kit by Wendy Williams of Australia (the kits are available from Sweet Home Quilting). The kit includes a simple design and the pieces are already laser cut for your convenience. The class sample is the house but you can select a different kit if you prefer (Sweet Home Quilting has several choices in kits).  You will learn how to sew the wool pieces to a background fabric of your choice. Once the wool is stitched down you will learn all of the basic hand embroidery stitches required to embellish this kit. Instructions will also be provided to make the kit into a needle book.

Class attendees will receive a 15% discount on class supplies!

Class Supplies:

•Wendy Williams pre-cut Wool Applique Pack (Sweet Home Quilting has several kits for you to choose from)

•Cotton and/or wool fabric of your choice for the block background and the needle book and inside pocket (2 Pieces 6 ½ X 15 ½ inches and a contrasting piece 6 ½ X 15 ½)

•Sewing machine and sewing supplies (thread, seam ripper, scissors e.t.c…)

•Threads to stitch down the appliques. These threads need to match the appliques if possible, can be wool (there’s a list in each kit) or cotton or invisible threads (the shop has wool thread you can purchase).

•Embellishment threads. There is a list of embellishment threads in the kit but you can use any size 8 perle cotton threads or size 5 perle cotton threads. You really only need the basic colors and maybe a couple of variegated threads.

•Needles for doing the embellishment stitches: Chenille needle size 22 or 24.

Creative Stitching Book Second edition by Sue Spargo (optional)

•A small piece of heavy duty stabilizer (6 ½ X 15 ½ inches) if you are making the needle book.

•Wool for the center of the needle book: 2 pieces 5 ¼ X 14 inches)

Instructor: Judy Ballance
Instructor Bio: I'm an avid quilter and I have made over 400 quilts in the 18 years I have been quilting. I love doing my own quilt designs and adapting purchased designs to personalize my quilts. I also love to teach quilting and I have taught at many of the local shops over the years. I have also presented at many local quilt guilds in Tuscaloosa, Athens, Huntsville and Madison. My philosophy of teaching is to show you the tips and tricks I have learned and to make the learning experience fun and creative. I encourage students to add their own touches to their quilt and to think outside of the box.
