Outspoken with Elaine Poplin
Do you have something to say? Learn how to create improvisational letterforms in ANY size for your next quilt statement.
Workshop includes:
--preparation and sorting of fabric pieces for efficiency and ease of reading
--demonstrations of construction of multiple letterforms
--joining letterforms to incorporate them into larger quilted pieces
--time to work/ask questions
--exclusive handout with over 100 detailed assembly diagrams for uppercase, lowercase, numbers, punctuation, and frequently-used symbols shown in “exploded” diagrams to suggest assembly order NOTE: To encourage improv construction of any size letterforms, handout does not include exact measurements and is not a comprehensive pattern. Handout is exclusively available to workshop participants and not sold separately.
Come with what you plan to say already chosen so that you can jump right in (shorter phrases and quotations are recommended).
Fabrics needed:
--Mix of light, medium, and dark tonal fabrics: the equivalent of a yard of lights and 2 yards of brights/darks will be a great start. CONTRAST IS CRITICAL so be sure that there is a distinct difference between lights and darks. Exact yardage will depend on the length of your message, so the above amounts are just a guideline.
--Scraps are great, yardage is great, strips 1.5" and up are great. Solids and prints are both effective, but I don't recommend large-scale prints with lots of values (lights/dark) in one piece of fabric.
--My samples are scrappy, but yours don't have to be -- it will be absolutely fine to work with just 1 light and 1 dark or bright fabric if that's what you'd like to do. Again, contrast is the most important element as you choose your fabrics.
