Wool Sampler with Judy Ballance

Wool Sampler Class Info

The class is from 10am-4pm at Sweet Home quilting on Saturday May 22nd and June 12

This class is a wool sampler class. You will learn to do a variety of stitches on 1 inch wool circles. The stitches you will learn are in the Creative Sampler (second edition) Sue Spargo book. To take this class you should already know basic embroidery stitches and/or have already taken either the Hand Embroidery 101 class or the Over the Hill Class. You will learn how to sew the wool pieces to a background fabric of your choice (cotton, linen or wool). Once the wool is stitched down you will learn the detailed hand embroidery stitches required to complete your wool sampler.

Class Supplies:

•Toned Down Sampler Pattern by Sue Spargo

•Creative Stitching (Second Edition) book by Sue Spargo

•Wool circles, 90 circles are used tin the pattern but you can use more or less circles. There is a wool kit available if you want to use that or you can chose your own colors for the circles and the background.

•Cotton, wool or linen fabric of your choice for the background. The amount of background fabric depends on your layout but to be safe you would need 2/3-3/4 yard of background fabric.

You will not need to bring a sewing machine to the class (we will not stitch down the circles in class but we will discuss how to do that and you can stitch them down outside of the class either by machine or by hand).

•Threads to stitch down the appliques. These threads need to match the applique circles if possible, can be wool or cotton or invisible threads. These threads will be used outside the class to stitch down the wool circles. This thread will be needed outside of class to stitch the circles onto the background.

•Embellishment threads. There is a list of embellishment threads in the pattern and there is an embellishment kit that you can purchase if you want to go that route. You can also pick and use your own embellishment threads to work with the wool circle colors that you choose. We will use size 8, 5 and 3 Perle cotton threads in class. Please bring threads to class to practice your stitches.

•Needles for doing the embellishment stitches: Chenille needle size 22 and/or 24 and a bullion needle.

•Scrap piece of cotton thread (8 X 10 inches) to practice stitches on in class.

•Optional Handwork pillow or lap desk or small wool pressing mat for stitching.

Instructor: Judy Ballance
Instructor Bio: I'm an avid quilter and I have made over 400 quilts in the 18 years I have been quilting. I love doing my own quilt designs and adapting purchased designs to personalize my quilts. I also love to teach quilting and I have taught at many of the local shops over the years. I have also presented at many local quilt guilds in Tuscaloosa, Athens, Huntsville and Madison. My philosophy of teaching is to show you the tips and tricks I have learned and to make the learning experience fun and creative. I encourage students to add their own touches to their quilt and to think outside of the box.
